Cesar Chavez Street Set to Become 'Las Campesinas' Under New Ordinance
District 9 Supervisor Jackie Fielder introduced legislation this week to rename the Mission's main artery, honoring the women of the farmworker movement.
One of the Mission District's most-traveled streets may soon carry a new name. On Tuesday, District 9 Supervisor Jackie Fielder introduced an ordinance at the Board of Supervisors to rename Cesar Chavez Street as 'Las Campesinas' — Spanish for 'female farmworkers.' Supervisors Rafael Mandelman, Shamann Walton, and Myrna Melgar joined as co-sponsors. The legislation still needs to clear committee hearings and a full board vote before going to the mayor. The push to rename the 3.5-mile corridor, which runs through the heart of the Mission, follows a New York Times investigation earlier this year that revealed Cesar Chavez had sexually abused women and girls over several decades.
